Materials Detritiation Facility

The design, build and operation of the Materials Detritiation Facility (MDF) on our Culham site has positioned UKAEA as world leaders in the detritiation and subsequent downgrading of materials generated by fusion activities.

The Materials Detritiation Facility is a first of its kind, processing non-combustible, intermediate level waste (ILW) on an industrial scale. It is laid out like a production line with ILW processed to create low level waste (LLW) and tritiated water. The tritium is recovered so that it can be reused in fusion devices.

The facility was designed to treat and process solid ILW generated by Joint European Torus (JET) operations, demonstrating JET’s unique capability of closing its fusion fuel cycle and down-categorising its legacy waste.
