Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced physicist with excellent technical, communication and influencing skills. The ideal candidate will have a background in fusion experiments, especially runaway electron physics with a relevant degree or equivalent qualification. This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant team working on an ambitious national programme that is exploring the options, challenges and solutions for accelerating the delivery of power from nuclear fusion: the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP).

While this position will be primarily focussed on STEP plasma modelling, appointees will have opportunities to work on modelling of plasmas in other tokamak devices, including the MAST-U spherical tokamak at Culham.

Job Description

What will you be responsible for?

  • Leading aspects of modelling and experimental understanding of runaway electron physics, with particular reference to their occurrence in Spherical Tokamaks.
  • Planning and developing methods to avoid runway electrons during disruptions and mitigate their consequences, should they occur.
  • Writing refereed journal articles and attend international conferences on magnetic fusion as agreed with management.
Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in physics or similar subject
  • Post doctoral level experience in the field of tokamak runaway electron physics, with a strong record of publication in this area
  • Experience in developing models for disruption driven runway electrons
  • Knowledge of methods to avoid/mitigate runaway electrons
  • Proven ability to conduct independent physics research
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent team-player with an outward facing work-ethos as he/she will work closely with scientists from around the world
  • Experience of considering safety as part of planning work

Desirable skills, experience and competence

  • Proven ability to carry out detailed analysis of experimental and modelled data, use of suitable tools, error analysis, etc.
  • Experience of supervising students or researchers
  • Experience of managing small to medium research projects
