We're looking for a Business and Innovation Manager to join UKAEA.

This is a demanding yet stimulating position that will suit someone who enjoys working as part of a team where creativity and influencing skills are utilised daily to enable and grow collaborations and relationships across UKAEA and with partner organisations. This is a new role to support STEP programme innovation and business development activities.

STEP is an exciting and ambitious programme to deliver commercially viable fusion energy. Fusion is a carbon-free renewable energy that will play a crucial role in global energy supplies in the second half of this century, safely and sustainably helping sustain net zero as global energy demand continues to grow. The successful candidate can expect to work across a varied range of projects and will be identifying opportunities to collaborate with industry on technology development in order to deliver fusion as well identifying opportunities where technologies developed on STEP can benefit other industries outside fusion.

Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for a Business and Innovation Manager who is passionate about new technology development, with good analytical and communication skills. The job-holder will have experience in establishing industrial networks and management of technology scouting projects. An acute business acumen and the ability to take responsibility for delivering timely and quality results with focus and drive are key factors to be successful in this role. 

What will you be responsible for?

  • Identify and develop strategic industry partnerships that can be leveraged to accelerate STEP delivery – e.g. accelerate technology testing and validation or through joint-development programmes
  • Work with STEP Product Development Leads to discover technologies and/or concepts that could align with external funding opportunities.
  • Carry out comprehensive market research to identify and undertake targeted actions to secure new business, whilst identifying technologies from other industries that can be used in the STEP Programme.
  • Identify opportunities to deploy technologies developed across UKAEA – develop strategy, competitive advantages and execute plans to secure new business.
  • Generate and manage bids for external commercial and research funding, whilst maintaining an up-to-date business development pipeline – reporting regularly on progress against targets.
  • Grow new business opportunities for the organisation; identifying and winning new business across UK and International Markets, working collaboratively across the Business Development team.

Essential skills, experience, qualification and competence required

  • Experience of commercial business development in a scientific or technical environment
  • First degree in a business related or technical (physics, materials or engineering) field

  • Ability to engage over a wide range of technical areas
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Collaborative and adept at working as part of a team
  • Proven ability to work with initiative
  • Well organized and capable of managing to deadlines and priorities
  • Experience in the successful preparation of both commercial and research council funding proposals

Desirable skills, experience, competence and qualification

  • Project delivery and management in a scientific or technical environment
  • Knowledge and experience of negotiating and operating a range of contract models
  • Technical proposal writing skills and experience
  • Experience of generating and/or managing intellectual property
  • Postgraduate degree in physics, materials or engineering MBA or business degree
  • Experience of generating and/or managing intellectual property
